Aechmea nudicaulis flavomarginata is just another one of
those nudicaulis bromeliads. I hadn't realized until referencing this plant that
it had a sub-specie status. The type collection location was the state of Santa Catarina,
Brazil.
The tag I acquired it under read 'albo-marginata'. I just assumed it to be a
cultivar that someone had appended an -ata to to make a pseudo botanical name as
sometimes happens. Kind of like my drunk Spanish speaking of placing an -o after
all my Anglo words. But nope - It has sub-specie status - though I don't know
why the population is unique other than the foliar anomaly.
Did I mention how hardy the are? I'd had this growing on top of a stump last
year attached to palm fiber. The squirrels kept knocking it over. At fall-time I
threw the clump into an empty pot. After the winter trip under the frost cloth,
I leaned this up on the ground against some other plants. Last week I noticed
color popping up in that direction. Maybe it's time to pot that thing. Here it
is.
